Around Christmas Week, 2010 there was a fire in one Downtown Spokane apartment building which had not been inspected by local officials for a long time. This apartment complex was at 123 N Bernard Street between Riverside and Spokane Falls Blvd on Bernard Street near the Suki Yuki Inn. I also used to work at the opera house and convention center a couple of blocks away from 1992-1995. My friend Mary also used to live in that building in 1994 who lives in Wenatchee now. Spokane needs to have it building code enforcement inspect these older apartment building to make sure people are safe. This guy who died may have not have a safe way since a lot of these old apartment building do not have elevators and are not safe for those that handicap and elderly. Current Spokane apartment codes do not make sure that old building have to safe for residents inside. I also used to live in the Merlin Apartments from 1992-1994 located at 29 W 2nd Avenue. This is now more of shelter for people when I last saw this building back in 2008 during my visit there. Please call the Spokane City Council and say you want more code enforcement of apartments in older buildings.
